Our Homeless Pet Population

I’ve recently had the privelage of speaking publicly on a couple occasions about the troubles that our homeless population in San Francisco go through on a daily basis.

Not just the turmoil from living on the streets and in SROs, but when you have a pet, it complicates a great many other things.

In San Francisco,

  • We have an estimated 7,500 homeless people,
  • We have the highest proportion of unsheltered homeless,

Of which, 20-25% Own & Provide Care for a Pet. That leads to:

At Least 1,500 Homeless Pet Owners

Let’s learn why owning a pet is so hard when you’re homeless, and more importantly, if it’s so hard, why do so many homeless people still have and constantly care for their pets.
